As Gramlich notes, “We got out of practice on building new infrastructure” after 25 years of little growth in power demand. The rapid expansion of electric vehicles, space heating, and manufacturing – all of which rely heavily on electricity – is putting additional strain on an already constrained system.

Data center development is merely a symptom of a larger issue: the United States’ energy infrastructure is woefully unprepared for the demands of the 21st century. The Department of Energy’s July assessment highlighted the pressing need for more transmission lines and grid upgrades due to load growth from data centers, among other factors.

As we hurtle towards a future where AI-driven innovations promise to reshape industries and redefine productivity, it’s essential to confront the infrastructure challenges head-on. Rather than relying on Band-Aid solutions or optimistic projections, policymakers must engage in long-term planning and investment to ensure that the grid can keep pace with data center growth.

Delayed or abandoned projects will not only disappoint investors but also hinder the country’s competitiveness in emerging tech sectors. As Burke cautions: “It’s hard to predict how many of these data centers are actually going to get built at the end of the day.” The uncertainty surrounding data center development is a stark reminder that growth must be balanced with infrastructure reality.

The American grid requires a fundamental transformation to support the explosive growth of AI and its accompanying demands. It’s time to acknowledge the data center delusion – the idea that we can build our way out of infrastructure woes without acknowledging the underlying structural issues. The clock is ticking; policymakers, utilities, and industry leaders must come together to create a more resilient grid that can support the exponential growth of AI-driven innovation.
