Images from Eastern Europe this summer have been dire. Ponds are shrinking, land is parched, and dead fish litter waterways that were once thriving in Hungary, Romania, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic. The drought has brought devastating consequences to an already precarious ecosystem.

The 2023 heatwave was a harbinger of things to come, but even its severity pales in comparison to this year’s record-breaking temperatures and lack of rainfall. In Hungary, nearly 99% of land is under severe or extreme drought conditions, affecting around 27,000 hectares (67,000 acres) of fish ponds.
