A 2022 incident while renting a new four-wheel drive left me momentarily at the mercy of its AI. The car suddenly braked hard on a bend, underscoring the need for more precise design.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (Ancap) has taken steps to address these concerns by introducing new design protocols for driver-interface technology. In cooperation with the European New Car Assessment Programme, Ancap will now penalize vehicles with intrusive or poorly calibrated safety systems. The aim is to create well-designed driver monitoring systems that support motorists rather than irritate them.

The ultimate goal of Adas should be to augment human driving capabilities, not replace them. We must strike a balance between technological advancements and the retention of essential skills required for safe driving. Engineers are pushing boundaries by isolating occupants from road noise, but this detachment comes with risks – including a reliance on electronic aids that can discourage active driving.

As we hurtle towards an era of increased autonomy, it’s crucial to address concerns about whether cosseted motorists will retain their driving prowess. The consequences of such complacency are far-reaching and alarming.
