Whales Move into Greenland Waters as Ice Disappears

The Uninvited Guests of a Warming Greenland As the Arctic continues to thaw at an alarming rate, giant whales are moving into East Greenland waters in unprecedented numbers.

A recent study reveals that these baleen whales were once locked out by sea ice but now feed on abundant fish and krill brought by warmer waters.

For decades, scientists and local hunters observed very few whales in these waters, with humpbacks being virtually nonexistent until 2006.
