Every summer, thousands of these ancient creatures converge on the shores of Oaxaca and Chiapas, driven by an innate instinct to lay their eggs in the same sands where they themselves hatched decades ago.
The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is responsible for this phenomenon. It's one of the largest and most critically endangered turtle species globally, classified as vulnerable by the IUCN.
